The 5th Royal Inniskilling Dragoon Guards is one of the most historic cavalry regiments of the British Army, with a proud heritage of service, honour, and battlefield distinction. Formed in 1922 through the amalgamation of the 5th Dragoon Guards and the 6th (Inniskilling) Dragoons, the regiment became a symbol of elite armoured cavalry excellence and tradition.
Renamed in 1935, the regiment earned its “Royal” status and went on to serve with distinction in major conflicts including World War II, where it played a key reconnaissance role with the British Expeditionary Force and fought through France, Normandy, Belgium, and Germany.
Following the war, the regiment continued its legacy in global deployments including Germany, Korea, Cyprus, and Northern Ireland, showcasing its versatility as part of the Royal Armoured Corps.
In 1992, the regiment was amalgamated into the Royal Dragoon Guards, ensuring its traditions and honours live on in modern British cavalry units.
